Home teeth whitening: aesthetic miracle or trap in disguise?
With the rise of social networks and the ease of buying products online, it is increasingly common to find recommendations of supposed “miracle” methods for whitening teeth at home. The promises sound tempting: a whiter smile, without leaving home, in a few days and for a very low cost. As cosmetic dentists in Plano, we know that the reality is that many of these products have very limited effectiveness and, in some cases, they can even damage your oral health if they’re not used properly. What are the risks of at-home whitening products?
While the idea of getting fast and inexpensive results may be appealing, home or over-the-counter methods of teeth whitening come with risks and some side effects:- Increased tooth sensitivity: many products to whiten your teeth at home can cause sensitivity to cold or heat, making even everyday activities such as eating or drinking difficult.
- Gum irritation: contact of whitening agents with the gums can cause inflammation, redness or discomfort.
- Tooth enamel wear: abrasive products such as activated charcoal or bicarbonate, when used repeatedly, can erode tooth enamel. This not only diminishes the tooth’s natural protection, but, paradoxically, can make it look more yellowish over time.
